Ones to Watch. Issue #1.

Hello new friend, a big welcome to the very first round up of ONES TO WATCH. Each week we keep our eyes peeled for the latest immersive experience, fitness craze, food obsession or newest gadget - some very useful, some utterly bizarre! Our job is to sift through magazines, social media, online content, brand communications, Pinterest boards, event agendas (the list is endless and I’ve run out of breath but you get the idea) so you don’t have to. All you have to do is come back monthly for your bite size chunk of the trendiest trends.
For our first edition we’ll be chatting multi-sensory cocktails, stretching with The Bee Gees, how to up your coffee game and announcing the return of the mighty Pop Tart!
So let’s start with booze, because that is usually a good place to start when you want people to keep reading. With the ongoing popularity of immersive everything, such as Roald Dahl dining and Alice Underground, the team at The Berkeley Hotel have combined our love of these events with our love of cocktails. Genius! You and three of your most esteemed friends can enjoy the ‘Out of the Blue’ experience, which combines all the senses to enhance the flavours of the cocktails on offer. Transporting you on a mixology journey without leaving London. As you can imagine the price tag is pretty hefty, but keep a look out for other bars following suit, soon it will be the next bottomless brunch. One thing is for sure the smells and sights will be better than the ones down the local pub!
From cocktails to something that can help you work off the hangover. I’ve tried yoga in the past and enjoyed it, but as someone who struggles to keep still for long, all that standing in one spot got a bit boring. Enter Disco Yoga! All the benefits that yoga brings but with classic disco tunes and some killer dance moves. Cover yourself in glitter, don some neon leg warmers and embrace your inner John Travolta! A really good way to shimmy off the stresses of the day with high energy instructors. We tried it out for ourselves and with more instructors signing up across the UK this new alternative way of keeping fit could be coming to a town near you soon, best dust off the white flares.
Oh the 90’s, the days of denim, blue eyeshadow and B*Witched. We might not be getting a reprise of ‘C’est la vie’ any time soon but noughties snacks will be making a return for 2018. Heavy in nostalgia expect Slush Puppies, Pop Tarts, Viennetta, arctic rolls and prawn cocktails. Following an event held by KERB street food in Camden which had all the old classics on offer, proved that people want their childhood favourites back on the menu.
I’m sure since the start of the year you’ve been bombarded with facts and figures of how much plastic we throw away each year, and rightly so, so here’s some more. In the UK alone we throw away 2.5 billion takeaway coffee cups every year, with under 1% of these being recycled. These shocking statistics have caused action, from the great David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II campaign to clear up our oceans to the government looking to add a 25p charge for takeaway coffee cups just as we saw with plastic bags. Don’t fear there is still a way to enjoy your hipster flat white on the way into work, KeepCup have designed stylish guilt-free reusable cups in a variety of colours and sizes to fit the tipple of your choice. The best news is many of the big chains are now giving a discount incentive for using reusable cups. Pret are giving a 50p discount, which means you can get a filter coffee for the bargain price of 49p! If the eco benefits and our national treasure Dave hadn’t already persuaded you, that saving surely will.
Staying with one of my favourite topics of coffee. Last year was all about the bulletproof coffee, adding a spoonful of butter or ghee to change a regular coffee into a superhero high performance drink. A little more extreme than Mary Poppin’s spoonful of sugar but with just as impressive results. This year we will all be transforming our everyday morning cuppa into a super coffee. With the superfood hype continuing, people are looking for other ways to add these miracle powders into their meals. Creeping onto the blackboard at your local coffee spot will be turmeric lattes, maca powder cappuccinos and wheatgrass macchiato. These are just as easy to create at home, a quicker and easier way to get your supplement hit than whizzing up a morning smoothie or juicing until your arms ache.
